Travel Photography: Art & Craft
What is travel photography? It’s a collection of different genres and photographic styles covering people, cultures, landscapes, wildlife, architecture, food, history, places of interest, leisure and much more. In this workshop, we’ll look at every aspect of travelling with a camera, from planning a trip/shoot to image selection, including shooting in the best light, composing images with the WOW factor in different lights, creating visual stories and editing images for different uses.
Travel photography is often dismissed as something anyone with a camera can do, but there is a world of difference between a travel snap and a great travel image. As a pro photographer, the founder of Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) and photography award judge, I see many, many images in many different styles. Using my photography, together with winning images from the TPOTY awards, this workshop will show you how to create eye-catching travel images.
To be a good travel photographer, you need to be able to work with different subjects, in different lights, and be creative but in your style. It is visual story-telling. Travel is aspirational, and great travel photography should be both this and inspirational as well. In this workshop, we’ll be looking in depth at what makes a great image which makes the viewer want to go to a destination or experience an adventure. From the first idea for a trip/shoot, we’ll look at how to research, plan and execute it so that you return with your original and creative images.
Pre-visualisation plays an important role in the best photography, as does preparation and being ready to respond to the light and unexpected opportunities. We’ll look at both and how you use them to make your images stand out and catch the eye.
But it doesn’t end there. Post-shoot, selection and editing the image for different uses is just as important, especially if you’ve taken them on commission or for a specific project or a photo competition. In this workshop, we’ll cover the basics, but in one of my other workshops – The Skill of Picture Editing – we’ll go through this process in much more depth and detail.
