Architectural Photography: Essentials and Beyond

Beno Saradzic

The importance of architectural photography cannot be stressed enough. Consider the following: millions of people worldwide have visited the architectural masterpieces around the world such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, The Flatiron Building in New York, Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Blue Mosque in Istanbul, or the Sydney’s Opera House. But there are billions of people who will most likely never have a chance for the same opportunity. Sadly, for them, all these iconic creations born of human ingenuity that grace the skylines of the world’s most amazing cities – do not exist. Except in the photographs. The only way a vast majority of the world’s population will ever know what standing in the “rain of light” beneath the majestic steel mesh dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi looks and feels like, will be through a photo. That is the reality of it.

Of course, you do not need to be a professional photographer to take a picture of a building or a bridge. We live in an age of social media and absolutely everyone is a photographer. We are swimming, if not drowning in the vast ocean of billions of photos, captured each day, from every corner and inch of this planet. Just go on Instagram and type “London Bridge” in the search window and hit Enter. You will quickly see what I mean.

But there are only certain photos that make it onto an official profile page of a London Bridge. Or on the cover of Architectural Digest Magazine. Not every person who owns a camera will be hired by an architectural firm to shoot the latest skyscraper or a concert hall they handed over to the client. That takes a certain skill set and a specific kind of camera equipment. Despite all the advancements of camera technology and its wide availability, there is a massive abyss between taking casual snaps and really taking a photograph. This process is deliberate. Predetermined. It takes patience. Precision. Method. You shoot with a creative brief in mind and with your client’s expectation who are paying for your hard-earned skills and time.

True architectural photography is an exercise of discipline, married with creativity, technology, and plenty of practice. This sub-genre of photography most certainly is not for everyone. But to those dedicated individuals who do not mind getting up before dawn, in freezing or sweaty temperatures, to be ready on the location to shoot the moment the sun gives out the first lick of its light onto the right side of the building at a perfect time, architectural photography can be a very fulfilling profession.

You are invited to attend a 5-hour hands-on workshop on Architectural Photography, hosted by an award-winning photographer, visual artist, and experienced instructor Beno Saradzic. Learn what it takes to capture iconic, timeless shots of the buildings and have people around the world admire them.

Beno will teach you what gear you will need, the right way to handle the camera equipment, the secrets to impactful architectural composition, planning and timing your frame, and to harness the mighty power of the digital darkroom, the place where all the magic happens. This is your chance to learn the tricks of the trade from a master in this field.
